“I’m glad I got to go out with a win,” said White, who finished the season with 50 goals. “This is the first time O’Hara soccer has been to state since 2004, so it meant a lot to become part of O’Hara history.”
White chipped in a rebound off a shot by senior Bridget Wages in the seventh minute and beat Irish goalkeeper Mary Wichmer again three minutes later off a feed from Wages for a quick 2-0 lead.
“We had some nerves against Duchesne in the semifinals and didn’t play the style we’ve been used to playing all year, but today we came out and played our game,” Celtics coach Mary Haggerty said.
Wages, who also finished with two goals with one assist, bumped the lead for O’Hara, 19-4, to 3-0 in 38th minute after winning a footrace to a picturesque diagonal ball from sophomore MacKenzie Champion.
Champion made it 4-0 in the 57th minute off a pass from her sister, senior defender Maddie Champion.
Springfield Catholic got on the board one minute later when O’Hara goalkeeper Ciru Franklin made a terrific diving save but couldn’t keep Sydney Miller’s from booting in the rebound, but Wages answered in the 70th minute off a feed from White.
“We wanted to prove that we could have been in the championship game with our performance, and I think we did that,” Wages said.
The Irish notched a cosmetic goal with 2.9 seconds left.
