Sydney FC has bolstered its defence with the signing of Australia junior representative Marc Warren on a one-year deal.

The 21 year-old represented the Young Socceroos the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup in and after spells with Sheffield United and the Central Coast Mariners, spent last season in the Scottish first division with Airdrie United.

“It’s a great feeling coming home,” Warren said. “I’ve always wanted to come and play for my home team, and after spending a couple of years overseas I thought it was time to come back.

“I still remember coming to the games when Dwight Yorke was here and I know a couple of the players so I’m happy to come back.

“I’ve played with Rhyan Grant and Vedran Janjetovic, and also grew up with Blake Powell. I’ve spoken to Blake because he’s from the same area as me and told him I’m coming back so it’s exciting.”

“For me it’s going to be all about good defending and defending first. I can get up and down the line and get crosses in but mostly it’s just about defending and keeping the back four proper.

Warren outlined two matches in particular he is looking forward to pressing his starting berth claims for:

“I’m looking forward to the games against the Central Coast,” he said. “I played with them a couple of years ago and of course the Sydney derby.”

Sky Blues coach Frank Farina spoke of his delight at signing Warren, who farina revealed he has been tracking for the past two years.

“I have known Marc for many years,” Farina said. “He was an ever present for the Young Socceroos alongside Rhyan Grant at the under 20’s World Cup in Colombia in 2011.

“He fits into what we are trying to do and has had two years in Europe so has a bit of experience. Marc’s a local lad too which is part of the culture we are trying to build here.”
