A BUSINESS group says Sydney still needs a second airport, despite plans to increase passenger numbers at the existing site.
A draft plan, to be released by Sydney Airport on Wednesday, sets out how the airport plans to double the number of passengers it handles annually by 2033 to 74 million.
The domestic and international terminals will be integrated and surrounding roads reconfigured as part of a 20-year airport masterplan.
The figure is down from previous estimates of 79 million by 2029.
Last year it handled 37 million passengers.
The Sydney Business Chamber welcomed the new masterplan but said the idea of a second airport should not be overlooked.
"Sydney Airport has a great plan for the future of Sydney's aviation needs, but the day is coming when we will need a new major airport for Sydney and we need to be planning for that now," the chamber's David Borger said.
"Badgerys Creek remains the common sense site for a major Western Sydney Airport and the numbers behind Sydney Airport only confirm what a boon an airport would be for Western Sydney in terms of creating thousands of new jobs and business opportunities."
The NRMA also welcomes the proposed master plan, saying traffic chaos around Sydney airport during peak periods is unsustainable.
"It's what the airport needs and the NRMA is calling on all parties to make this upgrade a priority," NRMA spokesperson Peter Khoury says.
