A MAN has been arrested and detained in custody over the violent and unprovoked weekend bashing of a Sydney man.
Two other men have been questioned by police after Simon Cramp, 26, was attacked in Sydney's CBD in the early hours of Sunday.
He was in St Vincent's Hospital in a critical condition but was reported to be improving.
A 24-year-old man from Sydney's Haymarket handed himself in at the Rocks police station today, a police spokeswoman told AAP.
"He was placed under arrest and is being held in police custody. Charges are expected to be laid," she said.
Two other men had been interviewed by police at The Rocks this morning and were later released without charge.
Police say the attack appears to have occurred after an unrelated brawl involving two groups of people outside an all-night fast food restaurant on the corner of George and Bridge streets.
It's believed Mr Cramp was assaulted by a group of about three men, who were accompanied by three young women.
Police have been interested in talking to a number of people captured on CCTV.
Yesterday, Mr Cramp opened his eyes after two days in an induced coma.
His mother, Angela Cramp, told the Fairfax Radio Network it was an overwhelming moment.
"He sort of fluttered his eyes and said 'Hey mum, what's happened?'," she said on Tuesday.
"We knew we had our son back and it was very emotional."
Reports the alleged offenders had turned themselves in was a "great outcome", she said.
"I think it's come from the community and everyone pulling together ... as well as police working hard to find these heartless thugs."
Mrs Cramp said her son's physical recovery would take some time.
"It's awesome to have him (back)... we've dodged a bullet".
