Leaky Sydney pipes cost 40 billion litres - Yahoo!7 News

Leaky pipes are expected to waste more than 40 billion litres of water in Sydney this year, the NSW opposition says.

The opposition has obtained state government data which reveals that in 2013, Sydney Water expects to lose 40.515 billion litres, the equivalent of more than 16,000 Olympic swimming pools.

The figures also reveal Hunter Water expects to lose 5.510 billion litres to leaks.

On average, it takes nearly nine hours for a leak to be fixed in Sydney.

Shadow Minister for Water Walt Secord said the figures were extraordinary and urged the government to look at ways to conserve water.

"We live on the driest inhabited continent in the world and water is precious, but Sydney and Hunter Water are allowing billions of litres to be wasted," he said in a statement.
