There were no charges filed, according to both the Sydney Morning Herald and Madden himself, who addressed the incident on social media Tuesday.
The Good Charlotte singer Tweeted a link to his Tumblr account Tuesday morning, which included a matter-of-fact statement addressing the incident that occurred while the musician is Down Under serving as a coach on Australia's version of The Voice, which holds its season finale Monday night.
"Sunday while I was at work, a hotel employee found a small amount of marijuana in my hotel room. The police were called and responded," he wrote. "Sydney is my adopted home and I appreciate the way the NSW police handled the situation. They have informed me there will be no charges. I hope this didn't cause too much drama for anyone."
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, a cleaner at the Darling Hotel inside the Sydney Star casino found fewer than five grams of the drug in his room, and the police were contacted around 4:30 p.m. Sunday. They arrived several hours later. Madden was reportedly present while authorities searched the room.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that although the investigation continues, he was not charged because Australian law permits authorities to issue a simple caution when only a small amount of drugs are found.
Madden was reportedly immediately asked to leave the hotel after the search, per company policy.
"He was not afforded any special treatment and he's moved out," a spokesman for Echo Entertainment, which oversees the casino/hotel where he was staying, told the newspaper.
The Herald Sun of Australia reports that both Madden and fellow judge Seal made the hotel their home away from home while serving as coaches on The Voice.
Madden is married to Nicole Richie. They have two children together: daughter Harlow, 5, and son Sparrow, 3½.
