GREATER Western Sydney boom recruit Lachie Whitfield is the round 10 AFL Rising Star.

Last year's No.1 draft pick was acknowledged for his 21-disposal effort against Carlton at Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Whitfield, a smooth mover and rated the best kick in last year's draft, has played all but one of the Giants' matches in his debut season and looks destined to have a long career at AFL level.

Recruited from the Dandenong Stingrays, he is averaging 15 possessions a match and his game against the Blues was the third time he had notched 20 or more touches.

"Lachie has showed his skill and class and demonstrated why we selected him with our first pick last year," coach Kevin Sheedy said.

"It's not easy coming straight into the AFL in your first year as an 18 year-old but he has shown he is comfortable at this level and already taking great strides as an AFL player."

Emerging Gold Coast star Jaeger O'Meara is a hot favourite to take out this year's Rising Star award ahead of impressive young Richmond midfielder Nick Vlastuin.
