A Sydney L-plater having a lesson with a professional instructor has been charged with drink driving.

The 25-year-old, who was behind the wheel during a lesson with the instructor as his passenger, was breath-tested on Redfern's Elizabeth Street, police say.

He was arrested after returning a positive breath test and taken to Redfern Police Station where he allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.025.

Learner drivers are prohibited from driving with any alcohol in their bloodstream in NSW.

Police will allege the man told them he consumed eight to ten spirits, along with wine, between 6pm on Saturday and 4am on Sunday.

He was issued with a field court attendance notice on a drink driving charge and will appear in Downing Centre Local Court next month.
