Sydney Corcoran goes from Boston bombings survivor to high school prom queen - Toronto Star

Sydney Corcoran, 18, went from a Boston Marathon bombings survivor to a prom queen on Tuesday night in Lowell, Mass.

She wasn’t able to dance, but she had fun.

Corcoran, whose foot was severely damaged by shrapnel in the April 15 attacks, attended the Lowell High School senior prom on crutches while wearing a white strapless gown.

Sydney’s mother, Celeste, lost both her legs in the Boston bombings.

Her mother told WBZ-TV that Sydney “deserves to have fun.”

Emotions ran high both at the event and on social media.

The Boston EMS tweeted that one of their workers who treated Sydney was moved to tears.

Others tweeted their congratulations.

Photos from the event showed Sydney beaming alongside her boyfriend.

“When I was in the hospital, I didn’t think this was going to be possible,” she told WCVB.com.

“Then I got to the rehab and I was up and doing things. It felt like I could do it. So it was a goal. This and graduation — definitely goals,” she said.

Sydney graduates next week.

Meanwhile, a fundraising effort to raise $1 million for her and her mother’s recovery is steamrolling along. To date, more than $750,000 has been raised. More photos and information have been posted on their Facebook support page.

There was another great moment from Tuesday night in nearby Boston.

Jeff Bauman, who lost both of his legs in the bombing and later helped identify one of the suspects, and Carlos Arredondo, the cowboy-hatted man who helped him into a wheelchair and pushed him to safety, both threw out the first pitch at the Boston Red Sox game at Fenway Park.
