One of the country’s leading television reporters, Peter Harvey, has died.

Harvey, who was with the Nine Network for 37 years, died of pancreatic cancer in Sydney on Saturday surrounded by his family. He was 68.

It was revealed in October last year that Harvey had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

He was hospitalised earlier this week, prompting a flood of support from colleagues and fans.

His daughter Claire Harvey, who’s also a journalist, responded to the flood of messages on Twitter.

‘‘Thank you to everyone for your amazingly kind messages to Dad. He is getting great care in hospital,’’ she tweeted on Tuesday.

Harvey is survived by his wife, Anne, his children Claire and Adam, and his grandson Rory.

He was a journalist for 50 years, first with The Daily Telegraph and then with Newsweek and the Guardian, before joining the Nine Network in 1975.

Colleagues Mike Carlton, Peter Overton and Laurie Oakes paid tribute to Harvey.

‘‘One of the things I most admired about him was the way he mentored younger staff. Peter’s was a generous spirit, he’s a real loss to journalism,’’ Oakes told Nine.

Former prime minister John Howard also paid his respects, and Twitter lit up with condolences from media colleagues and ordinary people.

Harvey left Canberra in 1997, but is still remembered for his signoff: ‘‘Peter Harvey, Canberra’’
