The Battle of the Bridge - ABC Online

One of the surprise fans cheering on the Sydney Swans as they won the AFL Premiership last year was the coach of Greater Western Sydney Giants Kevin Sheedy.

"I put my little Swans scarf on at the start of the finals series. It's a fantastic effort - the effort everyone's put in to get the game here to get it running," he says.

But now it's back to focusing on GWS and their second season in the AFL, which Sheedy admits is a different proposition because they can no longer rely on the 'it's our first season' excuse.

"Last year we had a group of young players walking with questions marks in their mind how they're going to go. Now they've been out there... I think the boys will be a lot more confident.

"I'm of the mind that we want to win as many games as we possibly can. Because you've got to test your players and you've gotta test your resolve as a group of coaches as well," he says.

But at the same time, Kevin Sheedy is tempering his expectations for the the first one or two rounds, because the key in something as long as an AFL season is to get the timing right for peak performance.

"You're not at your total peak at the first match because you've gotta be peaking hopefully again by September....

"Round 1 is very difficult... It's hard to gauge so I don't actually take a lot of notice of round one or two, but you have to because it's four points," he says.

The Battle of the Bridge (that's the Anzac Bridge) between the Swans and GWS is on this Saturday at 4.40pm at Olympic Stadium.
