Armaguard van involved in shooting

RAW VIDEO: Police set up a crime scene outside of Sydney's Broadway shopping centre after an Armaguard truck was allegedly shot at.

Four men have attempted a brazen armed robbery of a cash-in-transit van outside a Sydney inner-city shopping centre, witnesses say.

A witness to the incident said three of the men approached the Armaguard truck armed with firearms outside Broadway Shopping Centre at 8:30am on Monday.

The fourth sat in a high performance grey Audi station wagon parked in front of the van.

At least one shot was fired, one witness said. Another said it was fired by one of the would-be thieves.

Police confirmed one person fired a shot into the air.

One of the guards was struck to the back of the head, possibly with the butt of a firearm.

After the confrontation the four offenders left in the station wagon.

No money was stolen and no one was injured as a result of the shot fired.

Police have closed off Bay Street and a large number of officers surrounded an Armaguard truck, parked outside the entrance to the shopping centre.

About 30 police officers are at the scene and are combing the street for bullets.

The truck is parked directly outside the Bay Street exit to the shopping centre near the Commonwealth Bank and Broadway Hotel.

Sam, a window cleaner who was across the road when the incident unfolded, said he didn't see anything but heard at least one shot.

"It's pretty hard not to hear a gun shot," he said.

A glass awning directly above the truck has been shattered with what appears to be a bullet hole.

The guards inside the truck appear to be unharmed in the incident. They have been checked over by paramedics and are now talking with police.

A local resident, Greg, said he and his family did not feel safe after a number of violent incidents in the Broadway area.

Greg, who did not want to give his last name, said he knew the security guard, Hans Schulz, who allegedly was bashed inside the Broadway Shopping Centre in June last year.

The 69-year-old allegedly was punched in the face and slumped to the ground as he tried to stop a robbery on the shopping centre’s ground floor.

He later died in hospital after suffering a suspected heart attack.

‘‘I knew the security guard..,’’ Greg said on Monday morning outside the shopping centre.

‘‘He was a very nice person that helped anyone out. He wouldn’t hurt a fly. Now there’s another hold-up that’s happened today over here. We don’t feel safe when we come shopping now.’’

The shopping centre is trading as normal.
