Myer Autumn Winter Launch
Myer and David Jones launched their track-side fashion trends for Autumn/Winter 2013 this week with a heavy emphasis on elegance and colour. "The most important thing when choosing an outfit for the races is getting a complete head-to-toe look," said Myer Ambassador Jennifer Hawkins. “You have to think about the shoe, the hat, the bag - I always start with the dress and work backwards from there."
Hawkins showcased Derby Day black and white in a sexy, long-sleeved mini-dress and patent leather headpiece from designers Sass & Bide. “It’s all about the Hatinator - a cross between a fascinator and a hat," she said. "Not too many feathers or tricks this season. Choose a structured or sculptural hat in felt or leather for a cool, modern look." The Myer runway was full of colour and print with best in show from racewear favourites Arthur Galan, Jayson Brunsdon and Nicola Finetti.
Over at David Jones, models Samantha Harris and Louise Van De Vorst wore super chic looks from Dion Lee and Lisa Ho. Marion Joyce, General Manager for Publicity and Promotions at David Jones said “We’re seeing a real return to ladylike dressing. Women are embracing the traditional aspects of racing once more and using it as an opportunity to get really dressed up.”
The top trend choices for the carnival are cinched waist dresses, mid-calf pencil skirts with fitted bodices, print shift dresses and there are still plenty of peplums. “We'll see lots of classic monochrome and bright, bold prints" said Sun Herald, Fashion Editor, Kate Waterhouse. "There’s beautiful jewel colours too - such as ruby red, emerald green and sapphire blue."
With such unpredictable weather, as we've experienced lately, the best way to chill-proof your racing look is with layers. A cardigan or blazer thrown over your shoulders works well or try a cashmere scarf rolled in your purse. Sydney and Melbourne are not quite ready for opaque stockings but consider a closed-toe shoes or ankle boots to keep the look more autumnal.
The Autumn/Winter Rules.
Hats: Cold weather racing demands heavier millinery - avoid straw which is for Spring carnival only. Think felt, wool or leather in darker hues. Says Joyce: “Straw is strictly for summer. That’s how you differentiate who is in the know. Also watch your heels - a thicker heel is your best bet for winter racing."
Dress Etiquette: Traditionally the cooler months races require a knee-length skirt, hat and gloves. “It’s important to look elegant at the track," said Myer Racing Ambassador Laura Dundovic. “The track is never the place for tiny, mini skirts. Make sure only one body part is exposed - legs or decolletage - you can't have both”.
Beauty Etiquette: "Nothing is worse than tangerine skin in winter," said Jennifer Hawkins. "So go easy on the fake tan and wear shoes that you can stand in all day. "Nothing looks worse than a woman carrying her shoes at the end of the day - pop some band-aids in your purse.”
Autumn/Winter Carnival begins on Saturday March 23.
