Perth Glory FC vs. Sydney FC - Sydney Morning Herald

10:23pm: 18th minute: Vukovic saves the day for Perth for a second time after Joel Griffiths was played through. Griffiths will be thinking he should have done better.

10:21pm: 14th minute: Fabio is shown a yellow card for a poor tackle. With Chris Harold marauding down his wing, the Brazilian had better be careful. Perth should be taking him on at every opportunity.

10:19pm: 13th minute: Sydney come within a whisker of scoring. A Lucas Neill header is saved by a diving Danny Vukovic. Perth have had the better of possession but Sydney have enjoyed the first chance.

10:15pm: 9th minute: Perth have had 85 per cent of possession so far. If they maintain this and put their speed to use, Sydney could be in for a long night. Pacy Chris Harold will be hoping to take on Lucas Neill and Adam Griffiths.

10:12pm: 7th minute: Terry McFlynn is back and Matias Cordoba knows all about it. Perth have a free-kick in a dangerous position. Liam Miller takes the free-kick but misses the target by a fair distance.

10:10pm: The tempo has been high so far. Perth want to take the game to a Sydney side containing a handful of players who aren't as fleet of foot as they used to be. Let's see how this evolves during the match.

10:08pm: 2nd minute: Del Piero fires in Sydney's first corner of the night. Perth clear the ball with little concern.

10:06pm: The upgrade at nib Stadium means an empty far side of the field. A far cry from the scenes in Gosford earlier in the night.

10:04pm: Perth will start the match. Here we go

10:03pm: Referee Strebre Delovski has taken the ball off the podium (why do they do that?) and the players are on the field. If Del Piero has learned about the Glory since he arrived in the Australia he will be glad Jacob Burns will watch the game from the stands. His shins will be thanking him in the morning.

10:00pm: In news for the Glory, Perth have handed 15-year-old Danny De Silva a spot on the bench. This brings back memories of John Markovski. Now there's a blast from the past. Markovski was a teen prodigy in the old NSL. Sunshine George Cross gave Markovski his first start as national league level. He went on to play for just about every club Victoria has ever had.

9:54pm: The trusty iPhone says it is 26 degrees and clear skies in Perth right now, a far cry from the weather dished up at Bluetongue over the past two hours.

9:53pm: With McFlynn returning and Peter Triantis retaining his spot in the starting XI, it looks as though Sydney will be using two holding midfielders. That will give Ali Abbas, Brett Emerton and Alessandro Del Piero plenty of opportunity to push forward and support Joel Griffiths.

9:49pm: After Brisbane Roar scored a 1-0 win over Adelaide United earlier in the day, Sydney really need the three points. The win moved the Roar above Sydney on the ladder. Brisbane also have a superior goal difference to Sydney, s a draw tonight won't move Sydney above the two-time defending champions on the ladder.

9:49pm: OK. Now onto the night cap from nib Stadium. As expected, Terry McFlynn is back for Sydney FC and Adam Griffiths will partner Lucas Neill in the centre of defence. Tiago Calvano has been dropped after his poor outing last weekend. Also, some bloke called Del Piero is getting another game.

9:42pm: Hello and welcome to tonight's match between Perth and Sydney. Before some team news for today's game, comes the bog news of the day. The Wanderers have moved to the top of the league. A gutsy 1-0 win over Central Coast at Bluetongue Stadium has lifted Western Sydney into first place. What an amazing ride this team has gone on. As for Mariners keeper Matt Ryan and that penalty attempt, what can you say?
