7:04am: The blow-by-blow run down of the behind-doors bombshell that ended Ted Baillieu's rule shows that, by lunch time, he had completely lost the support of his party.

7:02am: It was a huge day in Victorian politics yesterday with Denis Napthine serving his first day as premier following Ted Baillieu's shock resignation.

There are plenty of different opinions on what went down. The Age's Melissa Fyfe writes that Baillieu was a weak leader who came across as oddly disengaged. The Australian's Judith Sloan says nice guys finish last.

6:54am: Prime Minister Julia Gillard's week in the west has officially finished. The limos have packed up and the circus has left town.

On ABC Radio this morning, Adam Spencer asked her whether she sensed the deep hatred and distrust for Labor brewing in the west.

Her response: "Some are full of praise, full of warmth, they want to get a photo, you get a really fabulous reception. Some people have got issues and concerns and complaints they want to raise with you."

6:51am: In health news, the nation's top doctors have called for an end to government subsidies for children to receive unproven alternative medicine treatments like chiropractic treatments, saying the growth in spending on children raises serious concerns.

6:44am: On the front page of the Herald today, the Greens have called for a mining tax-style levy to be imposed on the big four banks to make them surrender a slice of their earnings in exchange for protection from insolvency.

6:43am: Late-finishing road works in the CBD will cause some major delays this morning.

One northbound lane of George Street is blocked near Hunter Street and will be until 7.30am.

There are minimal delays at the moment but it will become heavy so avoid if possible. Bus services are operating as normal however may be diverted via Elizabeth Street later this mornin.

6:37am: And further to the Mardi Gras incident, gay activists organising a rally against police brutality tonight have bought sought formal approval from the police. Yet Surry Hills police say they will still be on hand to ensure the safety of participants and to minimise disruption for others. You can bet there won't be many police putting their hand up for that job tonight.

6:34am: It's the story that won't seem to go away this week. New footage of Jamie Jackson's run in with police on Mardi Gras night was aired on Channel Nine last night and seems to show the 18 year-old reveller punching and kicking at police, who are now under investigation for excessive force.

6:32am: Down in Melbourne, a horrific hit and run at 10pm last night has left a 31 year-old man in a life-threatening condition. He was hit and dragged 40 metres by a car which then sped off.

6:24am: Moving briefly to sports news, the 2013 NRL season kicked off last night with more controversy off-field than on.

The Rabbitohs smashed the Roosters. The score was 10-28 and there's a match report here and a picture gallery below.

6:22am: In Maroubra, a 16 year-old boy spat at a female police officer and kicked in the lights inside a police car when he was arrested last night for a robbery and assault in Hurlstone Park on Monday. During the robbery, it's alleged he kicked, punched and dragged a male teenager before stealing his wallet and mobile phone. Needless to say he has been charged with numerous offences.

6:20am: The Bolshoi Ballet drama in Russia continues to escalate. Revelations from the past few days suggest that dancer Pavel Dmitrichenko may have ordered an acid attack on the company's director because of a certain 16 year-old blonde ballerina. This just keeps getting better (or worse?).
