RailCorp says trains across the Harbour Bridge should resume at 8.30pm after they were stopped due to emergency repairs.

Passengers have been advised to delay their journey, and train tickets can be used on buses and ferries instead.

The suspension of services between Wynyard and North Sydney was triggered by loose plates on the Harbour Bridge above the train line.

RailCorp technicians first noticed the loose plates at 6.25pm and decided it was not safe to run trains under them. The plates could fall onto live train wires.

At 7.40pm, according to the Transport Management Centre, staff were on the Bridge fixing the loose plates.

Delays have spread across the network. Trains on the Bankstown, Inner West, Airport & East Hills, South, Western and Northern lines are all running late because of congestion.

RailCorp has dispatched replacement buses to Wynyard and North Sydney.

The suspension of services is the latest peak breakdown in a horror month of delays for RailCorp.

Passengers on the Cronulla and Eastern Suburbs line enjoyed lengthy delays on Thursday morning because of a broken freight train.
