The howler of the A-League season handed Wellington Phoenix a 1-0 win over the Western Sydney Wanderers at Westpac Stadium on Sunday.
The Phoenix dominated the first half with seven shots on goal to none, but the strike that decided the game came from one of the home side's most innocuous attacks.
In the 21st minute, Jeremy Brockie swung a speculative cross in from the left, but as keeper Ante Covic came out to intercept it he slipped and fell and could only watch as the ball bounced into the net.
The goal was Brockie's sixth of the season for Wellington.
The second half was a more even affair as the Wanderers chased the game but Western Sydney's attack was not sharp enough to take advantage of the chances it created.
Shinji Ono nearly had the equaliser just after the break, but his shot from close range was stopped by Wellington keeper Mark Paston.
For the home side Paul Ifill forced a strong save from Covic with a low left-foot shot in the 67th minute, and four minutes later Vince Lia lifted a shot just over the bar after a great move by the hosts.
The Phoenix could have added to their lead with five minutes left, when Tyler Boyd, who had just come on as a substitute, squeezed a shot just wide of the far post from the edge of the box.
The win takes Wellington up into fifth spot on 12 points, while the Wanderers remain on nine points.
Wellington Phoenix: 1 (Brockie 21')
