THIS was the scene that had police on alert. Two dozen Comanchero bikie gang members gathered outside a western Sydney home on Sunday afternoon before a 300-strong Serbian wedding.

With red, white and blue streamers hanging from their handlebars, they proceeded to a Serbian function centre in Canley Vale to celebrate the union of two friends, Roki and Sasha.

Along the way, several were pulled over by the police. Officers monitored the celebrations from afar.

But in a show of how brazen Sydney's bikie warfare has become, two masked offenders opened fire on the wedding as soon as the police left about midnight. Officers arrived back on the scene in less than three minutes, Fairfax has learnt.

Comanchero member Faalau Pisu, 23, was killed and two other members were injured as they crossed the street outside the Serbian National Defence Council.

Despite police keeping such a close eye on the bikie gang, the two suspected gunmen have not been caught. The perpetrators behind a further three gangland murders in the past two months also remain on the loose.

However, police have said the shooting may not be as simple as a rival gang dispute.

The acting head of the Gangs Squad, Detective Inspector Gavin Wood, said they were keeping an ''open mind'' and investigating all avenues into Mr Pisu's murder, including whether it was linked to activity outside the Comancheros. He said police could not rule out an internal hit linked to fellow Comanchero. ''What we can say is someone in the community knows what is behind this and we appeal to them to come forward as this is a young man taken in the prime of his life and has a young family,'' he said.

Mr Pisu's girlfriend marked her partner's shock death with a tattoo bearing the lyrics of the song he said he would play at their wedding. She had the words ''I've been loving you too long'' engraved on the back of her neck on Monday followed by the date of their anniversary.

''Nothing he could have done is worth his life and he did not deserve to be taken away so young and in such a horrible tragedy,'' she said through a friend. She said her four year-old daughter, Le'ati, did not understand what happened and was told her father was ''very sick'' when she said goodbye to him as his life support was switched off in Liverpool Hospital on Monday.

''When the time is right she will sit her down and explain what had happened,'' the friend said.

Comanchero members approached by Fairfax closed ranks and declined to comment. ''We've just lost a brother, have some respect,'' one said.

The gunmen behind three other gangland hits are also still on the streets and police say they fear reprisal attacks.

The shooting deaths of Muslim gang figure Yehya Amoud in October and Lone Wolf associates Roy Yaghi and Jamie Grover in August remain unsolved.

''It is completely unacceptable that shootings and gun crime are now becoming a regular occurrence on suburban Sydney streets,'' said the Opposition Leader, John Robertson. ''If the O'Farrell government wanted to drive down gun crime, they would … reinstate the September class of 300 new police graduates they cancelled this year.''
