Central Coast Mariners FC - Sydney Morning Herald

46th minute: Grant pumps a long ball forward to Lovrek, who's offside. Abbas then Petkovski concede free kicks. Sterjovski's delivery disappoints.

41st minute: Bojic closes down Yau when he was bearing down on goal. The Panamanian looks Sydney's most dangerous. Yau's then yellow-carded for a foul.

39th minute: McBreen rifles it to Necevski's left. He guess the right way but it doesn't matter at that velocity. Goal! McClenahan's foul was a push in the back. Little doubt about the decision.

35th minute: Mariners again lose the ball at the back under no pressure to allow Sydney to at least get the ball in the box. Penalty! McClenahan brings down McGlinchey in the box.

34th minute: The Mariners' movement is putting them on another plane to the Sky Blues tonight. Forget about the wage bill - only one side is playing like millionaires.

32nd minute: The ball actually comes off Ryall. Own goal. Now McGlinchey hot-foots it around the defence yet again. He, Rogic, McBreen and Rose have terrorised Sydney.

27th minute: Goal Mariners! Rogic launches a long-range shot that Necevski can't handle completely. McBreen, showing great persistence, follows through and scrambles the ball across the line. Another attack! Sydney defence in disarray.

25th minute: Holger Osieck is in the stands tonight. Bojic and McGlinchey open up the Sydney defence on the right. Yau at the other end jumps on a loose ball at the back from the Mariners. Showing a poacher's instinct but not executioon, he blasts over the top

22nd minute: Backheel nutmeg by Mallia earns a big-sceren replay. Emerton's wickedly swinging corner forces Ryan to tip the ball over the bar. Emerton has another try, this time on the opposite side to no avail.

19th minute: Reid concedes possession and Rogic bursts forward, passing it right to a lunging Bojic on the edge of the bix. Another attack and Rogic, after a neat one-two, tees it up for Sainsbury. He shoots over the top.

Rose was well forward again for that goal, causing havoc on Sydney's right. Necevski parried the first shot and the ricochet fell at the feet of Rogic, who showed a cool demeanour to score.

16th minute: Goal Mariners, Rogic! Just reward.

13th minute: Rogic plays a delicate ball through to put overlapping fullback Josh Rose in one goal. Necevski saves well at Rose's feet but gee, Rogic is a pleasure to watch. Great run by Rose, too.

11th minute: Rogic pure class on the ball, interplay with McGlinchey was sublime, but the final shot not of the same standard. Beautiful to watch.

10th minute: That came from the interception of a sloppy - and very uncharacteristic - Mariners pass. Similar to Emerton's goal last week. Now Sainsbury gives the ball away in a dangerous position.

8th minute: Goal Yau! Chips the keeper after two touches.

7th minute: Sterjovski's swinging free kick, for a foul on Bojic, is taken by cleanly by a rising Necevski.

6th minute: A dogged Mallia wins two turnovers, and then Yau is involved in another offside, this time as the supplier to Emerton.

4th minute: Emerton's outswinger cleared by McBreen.

Kick-off: Rogic's turn outside the box forces a hurried clearance and Hearfield has a long throw. It comes to nothing. Nice ball movement from Sydney on the right is called back with Yau offside. Emerton wins a corner.

Anderson, Ibini, Hearfield and Pasfield named on the bench for the Mariners.

Yairo Yau has been named as De Piero's replacement in front of an estimated crowd of 15,000 at Bluetongue Stadium.

Preamble: In a major blow for Sydney FC fans, Alessandro del Piero has been ruled unfit to play. This match had been billed as a clash of cultures and Mariners coach Graham Arnold this week was content to play up Sydney FC’s massive wage bill as a point of contrast. High-priced marquees simply don’t suit the ethos on the coast, apparently. It’s a good motivational ploy for Arnie’s well-drilled band of brothers, though in Tomas Rogic they have a playmaker whose presence on the ball belies the Mariners’ blue-collar image.
