A Sydney man has been charged after allegedly kidnapping his former girlfriend and holding her prisoner.

The 20-year-old woman visited her ex-boyfriend's unit at Kensington in the city's south-east to collect some belongings about 9pm on Friday night.

Police say while inside the man assaulted his former partner then gagged her and tied her to a chair.

The woman was allegedly locked in a room and held against her will until the early hours of Sunday morning, when she managed to escape.

Yesterday afternoon police arrested a 28-year-old man at the unit.

Police say they also found illegal drugs at the home, which have been sent for scientific analysis.

He has been charged with detaining a person, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, breaching an apprehended violence order and breaching bail.

The man was held in custody overnight and is due to face court today.
