I'm down but not out, says Ellen

Ellen DeGeneres says she is starting to recover from her illness and has assured her Aussie fans she will be in Sydney next weekend.

The Emmy-winning chat show host and her wife, Australian actress Portia de Rossi, were due to arrive in Australia on Sunday.

But on Friday, production company Warner Bros confirmed DeGeneres was too sick with the flu to travel and would delay her trip by a few days.

Now the 55-year-old personality has reached out to fans directly to tell them she is feeling better and her plans are on track.

"People of Australia! I'm down, but I'm not out. I'll be in Sydney next weekend, and Melbourne after that. More details soon!" she tweeted on Saturday morning (AEDT).

"Thank you, everyone, for your kind thoughts and tweets. I missed a week of shows, but I'm starting to feel better!" she said in an earlier tweet.

DeGeneres and her crew are expected to shoot a series of postcard-style segments for the top-rating Ellen DeGeneres Show.

But the exact itinerary of the trip has been kept under wraps.

Before the sickness delayed their travel plans, the couple was expected to attend a black tie cocktail party in Melbourne on Tuesday, which will now be moved to the following week.

Celebrity chef George Calombaris has been recruited to provide a spectacular menu for the vegan DeGeneres at the event, according to News Limited newspapers.

DeGeneres is also reported to be meeting with Prime Minister Julia Gillard to discuss the issue of gay marriage.

Betty DeGeneres, the talk show queen's mother and a proud supporter of gay rights, is expected to be alongside her daughter at the meeting, says The Daily Telegraph's Sydney Confidential.

DeGeneres, her wife and mother are also expected to meet members of de Rossi's family and visit a pub in Geelong, where the Australian actress grew up.

DeGeneres' Australian adventure has been 12 months in the making.
